The fluke 87V, also known as the Fluke 87-5, is a true – RMS meter with many features suited well for the professional troubleshooter but serves equally well for the do it yourself and hobbyist. It is designed with convenience in mind and comes equipped with a removable holster and built-it probe with test lead storage. This meter is built durable and will last for years and it backed with a lifetime warranty.

Some multimeters are either manual ranging or auto-ranging but with the Fluke 87V, you get to choose as you can easily select between the two modes. This gives you added flexibility when troubleshooting different types of electrical problems.

With some measurements accuracy is not really all that important. Other times accuracy makes all the difference in the world. The fluke 87V is accurate to 0.05% DC, is able to provide accurate measurements on non-linear signals for both True-RMS AC voltage and current, and features an analog bar graph that allows measuring of quick changing or unstable signals.

One of my favorite things about this meter is the large display. Some multimeters I have used you have to look at the readout a moment before you can identify what the reading is. The Fluke 87V features a large, clear and easy to read backlit display that is really easy on the eyes.

This multimeter can measure from 0 Amps, up to 20 Amps for 30 seconds, and 1,000-volt AC and DC. It can also withstand impulses in excess of 8,000 volts and can reduce risks related to surges and spikes.

Some other cool features about this meter are:

  • An audible warning to alert the user in the event that the input jacks are used in the wrong way.
  • A built in thermometer – no worries for having to carry a separate tool for measuring temperature.
  • It can record Min/Max/Average values and has a Min/Max alert that will automatically capture the variations.
  • Built in trouble-shooting features to solve problems with motor drives, in-plant automation, power distribution, and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Extremely responsive – this is evident with the continuity test feature.

What other customers who bought that multimeter had to say:

General – David Nuss said "Simply the best! I am teaching an introduction to electrical engineering course and purchased this meter to use at home and in the laboratory to test circuits and components that are part of student lab exercises. Meter is rugged and accurate. Have used other Fluke products and am highly satisfied."

Responsiveness – New England Yankee said "Look carefully at specs and responsiveness. The 87 is exceptionally responsive. Continuity detection, for example, is extraordinarily fast, to the point where it’s hard NOT to trigger the beep when testing by touching the probes, no matter how quickly and briefly you try to touch them together. "

Measuring Temperature – D Rice said " I love this one for its temp probe, no more are the days of carrying a therometer to take readings inside fride, a/c/ unit, all I do is plug it into the meter put the probe inside and shut the door within 30 seconds I have a very accurate reading. "

Overall, the Fluke 87V is a great meter and will provide years of great service for any electrical troubleshooter.
